The acre Humbug Marsh Unit contains the last mile of natural shoreline along the U. The marsh, which was to be filled in and developed, was saved when thousands of area residents joined with government agencies and nonprofit organizations to preserve one of the last natural areas on the U.
The trail is primarily used for hiking, walking, bird watching, and fishing. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash. Beautiful views, a decent amount of slippery mud at the beginning but it gets better. Trails are well maintained and marked. Lots of different sitting areas to watch Wildlife. Kayak launch and very large fishing pier.
The visitors center is open now, but I didn't have time. Great trail to see a variety of birds, some black top, grass and slippery mud in places. Trails well marked. Really beautiful along the Detroit River.
It was a great trail for kids and dogs, we loved the views of the river. I would love to start using this as my morning work out routine. Very nice easy trail. Very good markings on the trail. The trail is maintained very well.
The trail is shaded, hiked in 88 degree weather. We only saw a few other hikers. A good place to see wildlife. They have what looks like a very nice information center, but was not opened still due to covid.
Bathrooms were closed but did have out houses. Super easy, fun hike. If you go early in the morning make sure you have lots of insect repellent. Beautiful, even on an 82 degree day, plenty of shade and a breeze from the water. My dog got two ticks though! Nice easy well marked trails. Great views of the Detroit River. Saw lots of turtles, herons and other birds.
Great trail, you see a little bit of everything. Shorebirds, turtles, songbirds, frogs, and the breeze kept the bugs away. Great trail. Very muddy right now, make sure to bring some waterproof hiking boots.
For a Saturday afternoon, it was not that busy and I was pleasantly surprised by this. Trails are pretty much flat, a little mud but very sturdy boards covered most of the muddy parts. Beautiful and peaceful scenery, will definitely be back.
I will bring my dog next time. It was a nice fairly flat trail, still a little wet in places but well maintained. I walked 3 miles around both loops. My first trip here loved it! Lots of people out and about beautiful location. The trails were easy which is good with the kids. We saw a bald eagle hunting fish. Very clean and maintained. It was a nice visit all and all. The trail was great, loved being along the water. Just a heads up though, the trail is very muddy for majority of trail, so be sure to bring some boots.
