Global s focus the search bar. You might remember the original Ong-Bak. It was a little bit like Bangkok Dangerous, except instead of starring Nicolas Cage it was actually quite good. Its plot involved martial artist Tony Jaa running around modern-day Thailand looking for a statue's head and beating up all kinds of drug-dealing ne'er-do-wells in the process, sometimes while his legs were on fire. But now Ong-Bak is, well, back. Wikipedia describes Ong-Bak: The Beginning — which was released in Jaa's native Thailand last year — as "a historical epic with elements of fantasy [that] has nothing to do with Ong-Bak".
So, for reasons never really explained, it's set in an ancient world that never really existed. It'd be a bit like the producers of Sex and the City 2 turning it into a Viking movie just to see what Samantha would look like if she tried to have it off with a horny Norseman.
The original Ong Bak was praised upon release in for its brutally effective Muay Thai fight sequences as well as the movie's jaw-dropping stunt work, despite a predictable storyline built on reliable martial arts movie cliches. As a result, the three franchise installments each have distinctly different tones and styles, although one movie among them stands out as the strongest Ong Bak installment. With the least action and most convoluted story of the trio, Ong Bak 3 is the least accessible of the three movies in the series, although it still features some superb standalone sequences when the action does crop up special mention must go to the final fight scene between Tien and the villainous Bhuti.
The second film in the franchise arrived five years after Ong Bak appeared in cinemas, and the intervening time made a star of Jaa both at home and abroad. Connections Featured in Yo soy la Juani User reviews Review.
Top review. Wow, someone totally missed the point. Saying that Ong Bak was a bad movie because of the weak story is like saying that the Simpsons is a bad series because of the lack of continuity from show to show. The story is only there to loosely tie together the fact that this guy is being a badass. Which he is. There were only a FEW fight scenes? What are you talking about? There were so many fight scenes and chase scenes and the like.
Every time you thought you saw the coolest thing ever, he breaks out another move that STILL totally blows you away. The only reason that this movie exists is simply to showcase Phanom Yeerum's skills as a martial artist and an acrobat, which frankly, is enough for me.
If you have any interest whatsoever is the GENRE of martial arts movies where the quality of the story is usually not the primary concern , watch this movie. You won't be sorry. FAQ 1. Details Edit. Release date February 11, United States. Thailand France Hong Kong.
