This is the design of both the Easton and Berlin lodges that house Clay Bakers and the yarn shop respectively. But unlike the Masons the IOOF were the first to accept women into their ranks, and the first to build homes for orphans and the elderly. Membership is divided into degrees based on the degree to which the member has demonstrated the mission by leaving his own life behind and serving others in need.
Ritual practice enhances the energy in a place. Joint ritual practice magnifies and re-energizes that energy. My friend Bob, who is an appraiser in Easton said that when he was brought in to inspect the Easton IOOF lodge he and the others with him were shown a drawer in a dias on the floor.
When the drawer was opened, there was a human skeleton in it all laid out nice-like. Bob wondered what kind of weird ritual went on in that meeting hall. But then came the Great Depression.
In order to increase membership and reach a younger generation, branches are absorbing female auxiliaries into the main order, leading to the idleness of the female-run orders like the Rebekahs, while also creating a more inclusive and gender-balanced fellowship overall.
With international branches in 26 countries, members of the fraternity combined are estimated in the millions worldwide. Much like the Freemasons, the Odd fellows liked to leave their mark with esoteric symbolism and clues in the architecture of buildings they constructed for their network. There are some 10, lodges in the United States alone, dozens of which are also home to historical museums and small exhibitions across the country, holding collections of Odd Fellows regalia, archives for research, antique items and of course, oddities.
If travelling is an interest, membership can provide a valuable network that will very much welcome an international visitor, and assist in their enterprises, and certainly their travels wherever possible. Keep an eye out for the Oddfellow letters and symbols on your urban adventures. It also sounds like the place to inspire a really good story, one preferably told through the lens of Wes Anderson.
Forgot your password? I am not interreted in joining my self. I don't have time or need to find another fraternal orgnisation. This is our of curiosity. If someone as thinking about that. I'm Ceremony master Conductor in my lodge. I find Odd Fellow and Freemasonry complete each other well - they cover different aspects.
While the masonry gives more chances to personal growth and reflection, Odd has a stronger brotherhood with closer bonds and also do more active charity at least my lodge.
Since we meet often you know everyone and people really care about you. We work under "Friendship" - "Love" and "Thruth". Our command is to: Visit the sick, Relieve the distressed, Bury the dead and Educate the orphan. The rituals in Odd Fellow are beutiful and has many important messages, but they are not as personal as the Masonic rituals.
We have seven regular degrees - four in lodge and three in Encampment. The Encampments gather several lodges and you are still member of your lodge once you join the Encampment. In some countries they have less focus on the ritual aspects of lodge life. That's sad, since the rituals are important part of a Fraternal Order. As Elexir said, there are also some different Odd Fellow orders.
The biggest and most widespread is IOOF. Hope this gave you some anwers - feel free to ask anything you want to know. Thanks for providing me with the opportunity to share this piece with your readers.
M this year. I have been trying to reach out to anyone in the area connected to Harmony No. I will keep trying though and if anyone here can help make contact I would greatly appreciate it. It is good that Freemasons themselves are beginning to write about Odd Fellows to clarify some misconceptions. There are Masons who failed to do further research study and easily assumed that the Odd Fellows is a part of Freemasonry or accuse it as a copy.
They compared the degrees and rituals of both Orders. Conclusions showed a negative finding because the degrees of Odd Fellows and Freemasons are very different, etc. However, through my experiences the past 20 years or so, have learned that Integrity, Moral fortitude, and being nice is a hella lot better than being miserable…. I recommend joining our Facebook community and posting there for any members to see and connect with you. They can point you to the nearest Lodge too.
Oh no! Our Initiation forbids any humiliation or hazing. I was wondering if anyone can help me with this. About 60 years later the Freemasons built a new lodge and from that point the previous lodge is referred to as Oddfellows. Any ideas why this is? Thank you in advance. It sounds like once the Freemasons built their new Lodge building they sold the old one and it was purchased by the Odd Fellows to use.
Our organization was never part of the Freemasons so there was no split to be had. There is a long history of fraternal organizations sharing spaces as a means to save money and resources, so my best guess is that the Odd Fellows rented the space from the Freemasons and once the Masons outgrew the building they sold it to the Odd Fellows.
Just as simple as that. Many members of my families through the generations have been one, the other, or BOTH, though not my father so it all ended there. He became an Odd Fellow because The Masonic Lodge did not allow new members that were not sympathetic to the Confederacy. Later a appalled Grand Mason set No.
Being of 4 Mayflower families, related to 43 of 56 Signers of the Declaration and 9 of 10 of our first Presidents I know many of my family were Masons and I think I should have been one or the other, that it was a duty of mine somehow not given to me by my Father.
I cannot give great charitable donations.
