Newsquest Data Investigations carried out a survey on UK crematoria asking whether a mercury abatement system was installed. Exposure to the mercury pollution is linked to damage to the brain, nervous system and fertility. It appears to be the time that guidance for crematoria becomes more stringent and monitoring of emissions from crematoria more rigorous if we are to enforce the current guidelines and improve emissions in the future.

In Europe, manufacturers have decided to make a stance and reduce emissions voluntarily. Electric cremators are being manufactured in Holland and Germany and have been installed across Europe. The electric cremators are designed to be highly efficient, reaching a temperature and remaining at that temperature which then minimises energy consumption.
Huntingdon Town Council has opted to install two electric cremators into their brand new facility which is due to be open this year; with several other Local Authorities following suit in the next one to two years. Subscribe to our free monthly news review. Every year we gather statistical information from every crematorium in the UK and from as many organisations as possible from across the world, to track new and developing trends.
The Cremation Society is the only organisation that collects these detailed statistics and this information is used by UK Government departments, crematoria management, bereavement organisations, funeral directors and planning consultants alike.
You can also visit our 'Cremation numbers since opening' page to find details of numbers of cremations per crematorium, based on each region in the British Islands. As well as the national and international statistics given below, you can find more statistics by purchasing a subscription to our journal, Pharos International , and receiving our annual dedicated statistics issue.
